TFA News – TFA Remains in Dialogue with Duchy of Cornwall on Its Disposals Policy

The TFA remains in ongoing discussions with the Duchy of Cornwall on its plans for restructuring its estate. Members will have seen the newspaper and media headlines earlier this week, quoting the Duchy of Cornwall saying that it was looking to sell off 20% of its estate. The TFA can clarify that this is a figure based on estate value, not on area, and will include a significant amount of the commercial holdings of the Duchy, outside of its traditional heartlands, rather than necessarily farmland. The TFA is in the process of seeking clarity as to the split of the assets being considered. It is also important to note that any such disposals will be taking place over a 10-year period. TFA members with Duchy of Cornwall tenancies will be reassured, to some extent, by the assurance that the TFA has secured from the Duchy that, where tenanted farmland is earmarked for disposal, in the first instance, tenants will be given first refusal to purchase and offered flexibility on purchase arrangements.  TFA Chief Executive, George Dunn, said: “Whilst we welcome that tenants affected by disposal will be given first refusal to purchase farms, nevertheless it is always disappointing when we lose any land from the tenanted sector of agriculture, particularly in respect of estates like the Duchy who have been willing to grant long-term, secure tenancies which are rare in the current marketplace.  Our dialogue with the Duchy of Cornwall continues as we work through the next stages of its programme of disposals.”
