Last week, our Chief Executive, George Dunn, was invited to Harper Adams University to speak with students on the Land and Property Management courses, sharing insights from over three decades of advocacy for the tenanted sector.
His visit formed part of a dedicated day of guidance, during which George delivered three sessions focused on:
- The key issues facing the sector, including food and financial security
- Dispute resolution and the TFA’s role in supporting members through complex cases
- Placement opportunities with the TFA and what students can expect from working with us
George also took time to speak one-on-one with students, offering tailored advice and support for Honours Research Projects.
This visit builds on a longstanding relationship with Harper Adams, where George was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in 2024 in recognition of his service to UK agriculture and the tenanted sector.
Throughout the day, George emphasised the importance of collaboration between landlords and tenants. He shared updates on our work with the Crown Estate to develop the new Environmental Farm Business Tenancy Agreement (e-FBT) – a forward-thinking model designed to align environmental outcomes with secure, practical tenancies. He also celebrated the landmark appointment of Alan Laidlaw, as England’s first Commissioner for the Tenanted Sector.
In addition to discussing sector-wide developments, George highlighted the TFA’s ongoing policy and lobbying work – much of which takes place behind the scenes. He also reinforced the value of our tailored advice and support for members navigating individual challenges, from tenancy applications to succession and dispute resolution.
Reflecting on the day, George said:
“The tenanted sector of agriculture is so important to our industry. It’s critical that the opportunities it brings for landowners to join up with who are ready to farm are fully explored and utilised. As an industry, we must invest in the next generation of rural professionals and encourage them to champion a sector that brings together entrepreneurial spirit, stewardship and community.”
