TFA Blog #346 – Farm Safety in Focus as UK Agricultural Fatalities Rise

The latest figures for the 2025/26 reporting year have highlighted a concerning increase in on-farm fatalities across the UK, with at least 33 lives lost between 1 April 2025 and 1 April 2026. This marks a significant rise from the 23 deaths recorded in the previous year and serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced daily in the agricultural sector.

Farming continues to be the most dangerous industry in Great Britain, with a fatal injury rate estimated to be 22 times higher than the average across all other industries. While the nature of agricultural work often involves unavoidable hazards, many of the leading causes of fatal incidents remain consistent year after year.

Moving or overturning vehicles, particularly tractors and ATVs, continue to be the biggest contributors to fatal accidents. Other common causes include falls from height and being struck by objects, such as machinery or unsecured items such as barn doors in high winds.

Certain groups within the farming community are especially vulnerable. Workers aged 60 and over account for around 40% of fatalities, underlining the importance of adapting tasks and safety measures as we age. Tragically, the past year has also seen the loss of children on farms, reinforcing the need for constant vigilance when it comes to keeping young people safe around machinery and livestock. Self-employed farmers, who often work alone and without immediate support, also make up a significant proportion of those affected.

These figures are a sobering call to action for the industry. By taking time to review safety practices, maintain equipment and look out for one another, farmers can help reduce risks on their holdings.

Safety may take extra effort in an already demanding job, but it remains one of the most important investments any farm can make.
